女朋友就是在你们吵架时,虽然很想低头却别扭的不肯说出自己心里感觉的那个人;
女朋友就是爱你爱得地老天荒却无论如何不肯开口表达的那个人;
女朋友就是在马路上,怎么走步伐都想和你一样的那个人;
女朋友就是在你面前时刻担心自己不够漂亮、不够可爱的那个人;
女朋友就是躺在床上不断提醒你别误了上班,却忍不住用泪水打湿你背影的那个人;
女朋友就是你走过的地方无论多危险,她也能陪着你走过去的那个人;
女朋友就是虽然不会做菜,但还是毁了一间厨房,端出一碗加蛋、加青菜看起来 营养丰富却不怎么好吃的那个人;
女朋友就是想方设法从算命、看相中寻找和你结合的原因,而结果却只能解释为缘分的那个人;
女朋友就是你一天看不到,就像少一根肋骨的那个人;
女朋友就是你绞尽脑汁、想着一切办法去讨好的那个人;
女朋友就是在你满怀疲惫时,一想起就感觉到有阳光浓浓地染亮你的睫毛的那个人;
女朋友就是让你放弃男子汉的架子,把高昂的头埋在她温暖的胸前的那个人;

:)

Chapter 7
When Lenny was nine years old, we went to have dinner together at a kopitiam.
I ordered a cup of Milo for the children to share. After that, I took out my water bottle and drank the plain water as we waited for our food. Lenny slapped Yvonne’s hand when she took a sip of the Milo. Yvonne scolded Lenny when he slapped her. I banged the table with my hand and told them to stop it, if not they would drink the plain water from my water bottle instead, and I would drink the Milo. Yvonne continued to scold Lenny. Lenny slapped Yvonne again.
“Why don’t the two of you learn how to share?”
“I want my own Milo!” Lenny yelled. “I don’t want to share with Ah Girl lah! She licks the straw, and the straw has her saliva!”
“You two drink plain water instead!” I grabbed the cup of Milo towards me and passed them the water bottle. “Share this instead!”
Lenny looked like he was going to cry, but Yvonne folded her arms and smiled. Lenny then spanked Yvonne’s arm and Yvonne stopped smiling.
My son, before he died, confessed to me that it was a plan. They had wanted me to drink the Milo instead because I always did not order any drink for myself to save money. Therefore, they surreptitiously planned this quarrel for me to drink the Milo without me worrying about the cost.
That silly boy.
“Mama, when I grow up, I will bring you to a big restaurant to have dinner every day. You just tahan now, okay?”

Chapter 6 After two cycles of chemotherapy, Lenny broached the subject. Lenny had lost almost all his hair. He did not want to shave the remnants of his hair, for he claimed that those strands of hair were signs of him being alive. It pained me to hear him retching in the toilet. I had to drive more in order to pay his medical bills. The lights in the living room were not switched on. Lenny had moved in the dark to my room. Not a far distance; but when one could not even walk straight, it must be a chore. “Mama.” Lenny came in with the soft toy that Kelvin and I had bought before we got married; the soft toy that I had mistaken to be a shell-less turtle. It turned out to be a character in a not-so-famous comic. “Can you do me a favour?” I motioned him to sit beside me. I visualized a guardian angel looking at us: a weak mother and a sick son. It was the best combination for a fund-raising charity programme. Add in tears from the mother and a strong smile from the boy, this telegenic scene would generate at least a hundred thousand dollars in ten minutes. “Mama, can you pass this to Ah Girl?” Lenny laid the soft toy between us. “Melvin said that when a person is going to die, he will have powers to create something powerful. I put power into this. His name is CuteCute, because he is so cute. Now, he has the ability to prevent the Angel of Death from seeing children like us. Melvin said the Angel of Death has a…an otah to meet, and he has to take one person every day to heaven or hell. I promised Ah Girl something before, and I want to fulfil it.” I did not say anything to correct him. “I know cancer is, like, pass on from brother to sister and then like, sister will also have. That means Ah Girl may have cancer when she grows up, too. This CuteCute will save her. Mama, please.” As a mother, I should be telling him things like “don’t be silly” or “you will not die.” I said none of them. Instead, I patted his head, like how he had always patted his sister’s head. “Ah Boy, to show your sincerity, you’ll have to pass it to her yourself.” Lenny looked down and squeezed the soft toy’s arms. The body bloated. Lenny licked his lips as I stroked the soft toy. Ever since we had given him the soft toy, he brought it to wherever he went until he was seven years old. “What is it, Ah Boy?” Lenny turned to face me with half-closed eyes. “I don’t like to lie.” I widened my eyes. This was not making sense. Or maybe, it does. I waited. He did not say anything. I continued to wait. Both of us seemed to be waiting for each other to break the silence. “Mama,” Lenny finally started, “you and I know that no such thing as superpower exists. I never lie to Ah Girl before. But you have, Mama. This lie…may be able to motivate her. I don’t want to lie. I’m not saying that I want you to be the bad person. I just thought, since you’ve done it before, it should be easier. Mama, you understand?” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I cried when i was reading this particular page... it's so heart-wrenching.... |
